Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you were there? Struggled to remember someone’s name moments after they introduced themselves? Or found yourself reading the same paragraph repeatedly because your mind simply won’t hold onto the information?
For many people, forgetfulness is an occasional inconvenience. For others—especially those who have experienced trauma—it can become a daily frustration that affects work, relationships, and self-confidence.
The important thing to understand is this: forgetfulness is not always a sign of poor intelligence or a failing mind. Often, it is your brain responding to stress, overwhelm, or unresolved trauma.
What Causes Forgetfulness?
Memory is far more complex than simply “remembering” or “forgetting.” Before information can be stored, the brain must first pay attention to it, process it, organise it, and then retrieve it later.
When any part of this process is disrupted, memory suffers.
Common causes of forgetfulness include:
- Chronic stress
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Poor sleep
- Fatigue
- Certain medications
- Hormonal changes
- Vitamin deficiencies (particularly B12)
- Alcohol or substance use
- Age-related cognitive changes
- Traumatic experiences
While these causes differ, they all influence the brain’s ability to encode and retrieve memories effectively.
Memory Is More Than Storage
Many people assume they have a “bad memory” when, in reality, their brain never fully processed the information in the first place.
Think of memory like saving a document on your computer.
If the document was never saved properly, you cannot retrieve it later—even though the computer itself isn’t broken.
The brain works similarly.
Stress and trauma interfere with attention and concentration, meaning memories may never become securely stored.
What Trauma Does to the Brain
Trauma is not simply an event.
Trauma is what happens inside the nervous system when an experience overwhelms our ability to cope.
When the brain perceives danger, it shifts into survival mode.
Instead of prioritising learning, creativity, or memory, it focuses almost entirely on keeping you alive.
Three key brain structures are involved.
The Amygdala: The Brain’s Alarm System
The amygdala constantly scans for danger.
Following trauma, it often becomes hyperactive, interpreting ordinary situations as potential threats.
This keeps the brain focused on survival rather than remembering everyday information.
The Hippocampus: The Memory Organiser
The hippocampus helps convert short-term experiences into long-term memories while placing events into proper context.
Research has shown that prolonged exposure to stress hormones, particularly cortisol, can reduce hippocampal functioning and even decrease its volume over time.
When this happens, people may experience:
- Difficulty forming new memories
- Trouble recalling conversations
- Forgetting appointments
- Losing track of daily tasks
- Confusing the sequence of events
This does not mean memories disappear forever.
Rather, the brain struggles to organise and retrieve them efficiently.
The Prefrontal Cortex: The Thinking Brain
The prefrontal cortex is responsible for:
- Concentration
- Planning
- Decision-making
- Working memory
- Emotional regulation
Under traumatic stress, activity in this area decreases.
As a result, people often report:
- “My brain feels foggy.”
- “I can’t think clearly.”
- “I lose my train of thought.”
- “I struggle to focus.”
These are not signs of laziness or weakness.
They are common neurological responses to prolonged stress and trauma.
Why Trauma Makes You Forget Everyday Things
People often expect trauma-related memory problems to involve forgetting the traumatic event itself.
In reality, many people remember the trauma vividly.
Instead, they struggle with ordinary, everyday memory.
This happens because the brain is using much of its available energy monitoring for danger.
Imagine trying to complete a complex spreadsheet while someone continually pulls the fire alarm.
Eventually, your attention shifts from the work to the alarm.
Trauma creates a similar internal state.
The brain remains alert for potential threats, leaving fewer mental resources available for remembering daily information.
Emotional Memory Versus Everyday Memory
One fascinating aspect of trauma is that emotional memories often become stronger while everyday memory becomes weaker.
Many survivors can recall:
- Exact words that were said
- Specific facial expressions
- Particular smells
- Sounds
- Physical sensations
Yet they may forget:
- Where they placed their keys
- Whether they replied to an email
- What someone told them yesterday
- Appointments
- Names
This occurs because emotional survival memories are processed differently from everyday factual memories.
Can the Brain Recover?
The encouraging news is yes.
The brain possesses remarkable neuroplasticity—the ability to reorganise and create new neural pathways throughout life.
As people heal from trauma, many notice improvements in:
- Concentration
- Memory
- Mental clarity
- Decision-making
- Emotional regulation
Recovery does not usually happen overnight.
Healing the nervous system often occurs gradually as the brain begins to recognise that it is safe again.
Supporting your brain’s recovery involves caring for both your mind and body. Prioritising quality sleep, engaging in regular physical activity, practising mindfulness or relaxation techniques, maintaining meaningful social connections, and addressing medical factors such as vitamin deficiencies or medication side effects can all contribute to improved concentration, memory, and overall cognitive functioning. As the nervous system begins to feel safer, many people gradually notice greater mental clarity and improved memory.
Be Gentle With Yourself
If you’ve been frustrated by your forgetfulness, consider this possibility:
Your brain may not be failing.
It may simply have spent a long time trying to protect you.
Healing is not about forcing yourself to remember better.
It is about creating enough safety—both physically and emotionally—for your brain to move out of survival mode and return to learning, connecting, and living.
Recovery is not measured by never forgetting something again.
It is measured by slowly reclaiming the parts of yourself that trauma temporarily placed on hold.
